Officer’s Shoes

By Sri Lekhak

Trampling on the flowers blooming in
the footprints of the printing press’s lead letters
Gulliver’s shoes
stamp and stomp about

The peasants of Lilliput
run after with ladders
to climb up Gulliver’s shoes

The shoes never stop
The peasants never give up!

* Translated from Manipuri by Thoithoi O’Cottage. The original poem appeared in Sri Lekhak’s Hingliba Meesinggee Catalogue (The Catalogue of Living People), published in 1995 by Sahitya Seva Samiti, Kakching, Manipur.
