Portico (Prakriti and Purusha)

By Sri Lekhak

Old Man!
measuring yawning cracks with a tape
hitting a nail into your footprint, firmly
(on one side)

A sentriless
abandoned portico
spring flowers blooming, inside behind.

Yo! Could I pluck a flower?
I’m a beggar
who loves flowers!

* Translated from Manipuri by  Thoithoi O’Cottage. The original poem appeared in Sri Lekhak’s Hingliba Meesinggee Catalogue (The Catalogue of Living People), published in 1995 by Sahitya Seva Samiti, Kakching, Manipur.
