Poverty

(an example)

By Sri Lekhak

Before coming of age
                I was charmed
by the tune of life’s music

When grown up
I find my legs and footprints
                both lying in my courtyard,
and the rest in a tight cell of a strange castle,
                heaven’s lingering tenacious harpoon fingernails

                                coming in through the window
                                                clipping
                                                clipping those!
* Translated from Manipuri by Thoithoi O’Cottage. The original poem appeared in Sri Lekhak’s Hingliba Meesinggee Catalogue (The Catalogue of Living People), published in 1995 by Sahitya Seva Samiti, Kakching, Manipur.
