Cottage Reader publishes creative writing, critical and theoretical essays in the areas of art, culture, literature and philosophy, and commentaries on and reviews of current writings in these areas. We also publish commentaries on any  articles appeared in the past issues. Our scope is international and interdisciplinary. Contributions from diverse critical, theoretical, and historical perspectives are welcome.

We examine all work received and accept that which seems best. We regret that the small size of our staff does not permit us to give individual criticism.

Submission of Manuscripts. Manuscripts can be submitted in either APA or Chicago style (footnotes and endnotes are allowed). We prefer long articles, and while we do not impose any maximum word count or length restrictions on our contributors, we encourage our contributors to be concise.

We publish at least 5 poems of each featured poets per issue, and, therefore, we find it appropriate if contributing poets submit at least 8 poems in one email. Simultaneous submissions are accepted—contributors can submit poems, essays, reviews, interviews, etc. at once.

Provide a brief biographical note at the end of the manuscript, along with complete contact information, including home and work mailing addresses, telephones, and e-mail addresses.

Authors should submit articles as attachments, sent to

Please place the entire document, including author biography and full address information, on one file. Do not split your essay into separate documents.

Does Cottage Reader accept previously published material?
We don’t consider anything that has been previously published or accepted for publication, anywhere, in any form. Work that has appeared online is considered to have been previously published and should not be submitted.

Illustrations. Illustrations submitted (line drawings, halftones, photos, photomicrographs, etc.) should be clean originals or digital files. Illustrations should be in the text and they should also be submitted as attachments numbered/titled appropriately. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines:

  • 300 dpi or higher
  • sized to fit on journal page
  • EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only
  • submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files

Tables and Figures.Tables and figures should not be embedded in the text, but should be included as separate sheets or files. A short descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear legend, and any footnotes suitably identified below. All units must be included. Figures should be completely labeled, taking into account necessary size reduction. Captions should be typed, double-spaced, on a separate sheet. All original figures should be clearly marked in pencil on the reverse side with the number, author’s name, and top edge indicated.

All proofing will be done by the editors.

Does Cottage Reader pay money?
